These probes reach these APs at different time and intensity. The smartphone start to send probes, these probes are received by all APs within the range of the smartphone. Lets take a mall for example, with many APs. Very strong signal means that the smartphone is next to the AP, weak signal means the smartphone is distant. If the AP can receive the signal strength it can infer the distance that a smartphone is from the AP. If the AP can capture the UniqueID it can say how many unique users are next to the AP. More data is sent to the AP but lets focus on these two that are the most important.

These probes have informations like the unique id of the smartphone (The MAC Address) and signal power between the smartphone and the AP. The Access Point (AP) receives all the probes that are sent by the smartphones. We are in the middle of the WiFi Analytics process. Lets go to the next component of this system, the Access Point. Basically what the smartphone does is always ask: РІР‚СљWho is there?РІР‚Сњ and when the smartphone send this request it also sends his Unique ID that we call MAC Address. This probe is captured by the Access Point that is the device that will connect your smartphone to the Internet. So that your smartphone discover which WiFi networks are available, the smartphone sends a broadcast package that we call Probe. When you open your WiFi configuration in your smartphone you can see the name of the networks that are available for connections, this is technically called SSID. So the best thing to do is connect to a WiFi network always that possible. You know, the 3G and 4G networks are not as good as a WiFi network and the data plans from carriers are small and expensive.

These smartphones have a WiFi interface that allow it to connect in WiFi networks. Today I would say that almost everyone has an smartphone as they are affordable for everyone. Lets start this story talking about the smartphone. I am going to try to be the most didactical possible to explain this as I would explain to my grandmother. Most used to say that this is the real Big Brother but it is not. Not surprisingly, most people never heard of it and when I explain to them and they understand the power of this tool they start to wondering how blind they are to world of data and how much decision power companies have in their hands based on data they collect from customers. It is not unusual during a family dinner or a barbecue with friends someone asks what is WiFi Analytics and how it works.
